Experimentation of Mitigation Strategies to Contrast the Urban Heat Island Effect: A Case Study of an Industrial District in Italy to Implement Environmental Codes

The European goals to reduce CO2 emissions by up 40% 2030 and reach carbon neutrality 2050 cannot ignore the building sector, that accounts for 27% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In context sustainable development goals, it is a key point consider reduction heat island effect in urban environment. Considering this background proven absence clear promotion mitigation measures, research aims at investigating influence on several micro-climate parameters different retrofitting strategies level (green façades) cooling scale (e.g., cool pavements, trees). As case study, application these measures an industrial district located Italy evaluated. ENVI-met software was adopted perform outdoor environmental simulations, order assess effectiveness proposed, considering both whole portion, focusing canyons. Cool pavements proved be most promising strategy air temperature increase relative humidity. Slighter effects conditions can achieved planting trees installing green walls that, contrast, significantly affect mean radiant buildings’ surface temperatures, respectively.
